Typical price: Salefork's estimate of an everyday US shelf price for each ingredient. Pick your city to price it from this week's ad.

Ingredients

  • 1 454 grams loaf of crusty french bread
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups half and half
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg optional but this gives it a "doughnuty" taste
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 6 tbsp salted butter

Steps

  1. Heat the oven to 350 F and butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the French bread into cubes and spread them in the dish.
  3. Whisk the eggs, half and half, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, then pour the mixture over the bread.
  4. Mix the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and butter until crumbly, then scatter it over the casserole.
  5. Rest the casserole for 10 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes, until puffed, golden, and the center reaches 160 F.
