Ingredients

  • 1 jars (32 oz) grape leaves
  • 1 lb ground sirloin
  • 1/2 cup lon-grain white rice
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 2 lemons
  • 2 stalks celery (optional)
  • 5 cabbage leaves (optional)
  • 2 tbsp dried mint

Steps

  1. Rinse the grape leaves and soak them in hot water for 10 minutes, then drain.
  2. Mix the ground sirloin, rice, garlic, salt, pepper, dried mint, and the juice of one lemon in a bowl.
  3. Line a large pot with cabbage leaves or celery, if using.
  4. Place about one tablespoon of filling near each grape leaf stem, fold in the sides, and roll tightly.
  5. Arrange the rolls seam-side down in the pot, add water to cover them halfway, and top with the remaining lemon juice.
  6. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 40 minutes, until the beef reaches 160 F and the rice is tender.
