Ingredients
- 1/2 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate
- 4 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 5 tbsp unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and oil a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
- Melt the 4 ounces chocolate with the cocoa powder and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over low heat for 3 minutes.
- Beat 1 cup butter and 2 1/2 cups sugar until light, then beat in the eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla.
- Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, then add it alternately with the buttermilk to the butter mixture.
- Stir half the batter into the chocolate mixture, spoon both batters into the pan, and swirl them together.
- Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until firm in the center, then cool for 15 minutes.
- Melt the remaining butter with 3/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup water, stir in 2 teaspoons vanilla, and spread the glaze over the cake.
