Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups king arthur unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 cups caramel
- 3 tbsp heavy cream
- 3 cups chopped milk chocolate or dark chocolate
- 1 tbsp vegetable shortening (optional)
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and line a 9-by-13-inch pan with parchment.
- Mix the butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla, flour, and salt, then press the dough evenly into the pan.
- Bake the crust for 12 to 14 minutes, until lightly golden.
- Warm the caramel and heavy cream in a saucepan over low heat, then spread the mixture over the crust.
- Melt the chocolate with the shortening, if using, and spread it over the caramel layer.
- Chill the bars for 8 to 10 minutes, then cut them into pieces.
