Ingredients
- 58 g unsalted butter plus extra for the dish
- 1 kg potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
- 30 g onion finely diced
- 3 tbsp plain flour
- grating of nutmeg
- 590 ml whole milk
- chopped parsley to serve (optional)
Steps
- Heat the oven to 375 F and butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk in the flour, and cook for 2 minutes.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and nutmeg, then simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Layer the potatoes and onion in the baking dish and pour the sauce evenly over them.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 75 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for 20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden.
