- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (optional)
- 1 cup very hot water
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/8 tsp salt
- 6 tbsp milk
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 1/3 cups powdered sugar
- brown sprinkles
- 22 fresh small strawberries
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and oil a 9-by-13-inch sheet pan.
- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
- Melt one cup butter with the cocoa and hot water in a saucepan, then stir it into the dry mixture.
- Whisk in the buttermilk, eggs, and two teaspoons vanilla, then spread the batter in the pan.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the center is firm and a tester comes out clean.
- Melt the remaining butter with the cocoa, salt, and milk, remove from the heat, and stir in the remaining vanilla and powdered sugar.
- Spread the frosting over the warm cake, then add the brown sprinkles and strawberries.
