Ingredients
- 1 cup butter
- 1/4 cup baking cocoa
- 1 cup water
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 1/2 drops red food coloring (optional)
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/4 cup baking cocoa
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 7/8 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 dash salt
- 3/4 cup chopped almonds (optional)
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.
- Melt 1 cup butter with 1/4 cup cocoa and the water in a saucepan over medium heat, then remove it from the heat.
- Whisk the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl, then stir in the warm butter mixture, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla.
- Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 20 to 23 minutes, until the center is firm.
- Melt the remaining butter with the remaining cocoa and buttermilk in a saucepan, then whisk in the confectioners' sugar, vanilla, and salt.
- Spread the frosting over the warm cake, add the almonds if using, and cool for 10 minutes before cutting.
