- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1 1/4 cups boiling water
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
- Whisk the flour, first sugar, cocoa powder, and baking powder with the salt, then stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
- Spread the batter in the pan and sprinkle it with the brown sugar, remaining white sugar, and cocoa powder.
- Pour the boiling water over the top without stirring, then bake for 35 minutes, until the cake is set and pudding forms underneath.
- Cool the cake for 5 minutes before serving.
