Ingredients
- 1 cup butter
- 3 cups packed brown sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup baking cocoa
- 3 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2/3 cups sour cream
- 2/3 cups boiling water
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3 oz unsweetened chocolate
- 3 oz semisweet chocolate
- 5 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Steps
- Heat the oven to 350 F and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Beat one cup of butter and the brown sugar in a large bowl, then beat in the eggs and two teaspoons of vanilla.
- Whisk the flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt in another bowl, then mix them into the butter mixture with two-thirds cup sour cream and boiling water.
- Divide the batter between the pans and bake for 28 to 32 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Melt the remaining butter and both chocolates in a saucepan over low heat, then cool for 10 minutes.
- Beat in the confectioners' sugar, remaining sour cream, and vanilla, then frost the cooled cake layers.
