1/4 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 cloves garlic
1/4 cup chopped carrot
1/2 tsp ground coriander
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp cayenne
1/4 tsp black pepper
15 oz canned tomatoes
1 cup water
1/2 tsp salt
1 3/4 tsp sugar
1 small bay leaf

Steps

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, then toast the cumin seeds for 30 seconds.
Add the onion, garlic, and carrot, and cook for 4 minutes until the onion softens.
Stir in the coriander, turmeric, cayenne, black pepper, tomatoes, water, salt, sugar, and bay leaf.
Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 18 minutes.
Remove the bay leaf and blend the soup until smooth.
Return the soup to the saucepan and warm it for 2 minutes before serving.
